She was the first brand new battleship to enter the pacific theatre. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, she joined the Pacific theatre of war. Her primary role during her early life was to act as a potential counter to the Tirpitz which was terrorizing the Atlantic Ocean and sank supply convoys. She was nicknamed “The Showboat” due to the amount of attention she received near the end of her construction. She had to have a beam of less than 34m so she could fight within the Panama Canal and a draft of 12m so she could be used in as many shipyards as possible. She was launched on June 1940 and was built to be within the Washington Naval Treaty and London Naval Treaty which made her a challenge to design. This ship was first laid down on October 1937 in New York. USS North Carolina (BB-55) aka “The Showboat”
